The Come Back of the GWL: 7/1/2017: Setting the Plan in Motion

The GWL Express has been on a much longer hiatus than I wanted it to be. The geekwholanded.com was always meant to be a beast of its own while still being a hub for all my other work. Then it all fell off the rails pretty gloriously I must say. Wow did it ever fall off the rails. Not many online personalities and whatnot would admit that things fell off the rails but here I am admitting it. Some of my GWL adventures were partially health related but most of it is on me. Sometimes in admitting your frailties you become better so this is me saying, you know what I am going to be better. Welcome to the Come Back of the GWL. What does this come back entail? Stick around, come with me on this adventure. I think this will be fun for everyone.

Of course by golly I could keep up a steady twitter presence so at least that much. By golly though I really let stuff lapse. That is going to change.

Here is the plan of assault for the Come Back of the GWL. As I do have a loose plan here. There is some stuff that I want to do that doesn’t quite fit into stuff I do for Monkeys Fighting Robots. Mostly the really weird single issue adventures that appeal mostly to me. I accept the fact that I do like what I like and that’s okay. I also want to show more of my interests outside of the comic book realm and such. Weirdest thing about me most don’t know, I have been digging the heck out of the Great British Baking Show. The new season started up on PBS here and I adore the show. This is probably one of my favorite shows of the summer. This is just a hint of the journey you will be on with me here.

The site now is going to go more in the direction that I was planning for in the first place. It’s taken me awhile to get there but in my hiatus I’m figuring out more of what I want. A site that is ultimately me. It’s a site that represents me and what I like and what I’m into at any given period of time. What strikes my fancy and what catches my eye, this is the ultimate realm of my GWL Universe. The Geek Who Landed site is going to be a much more varied collection into my mind. Yes the site will be mostly comic books and related things but there will be a few other surprises in the mix. I am looking forward to seeing where this come back tour takes me in the weeks and months to come.

I have still technically been around but not in the way I should be. Now I am ready to be back in the full GWL business of it all.

Let the Come Back of the GWL begin in full. I got a podcast That’s the Issue with my pal Matt Lune that’s been going better than I could have ever imagined.  This has been a case of I’ve been around but not in the state that I know I could be. Now it’s time to return to form and be better than ever before. This is going to be a crazy ride but I’m excited for what’s to come. The GWL Express is going to be running at full speed ahead and it is going to be absolutely brilliant. Welcome to the land of fun and wonders, welcome to the Geek Who Landed Experience.

DC Extreme: Extreme Justice #2: Yay Character Development!

Back to the DC Extreme Universe with Extreme Justice #2! After the events of Extreme Justice #1, life is tense for our new team. First of all, Captain Atom is out of the picture. For a team to be successful it needs some kind of leader. Any other team would have called it a day after that. Of course, this team is made of sterner stuff and they have a job to do. The mystery of Mount Thunder intensifies in #2. Our Beta Team pals are only the beginning of the craziness lying within this hostile new headquarters. Our story is starting to heat up now. What will Extreme Justice do now without Captain Atom? Will the team survive his loss? Let the mystery be revealed as I venture forth into Extreme Justice #2.

I feel my desire for Crystal Pepsi rising as I return to Extreme Justice once more.

In adventures of Extreme Justice, this issue is the toughest to get a handle on. General Synge has one big evil villain moment but that’s about it for him in this issue. In all honesty, I was this close to combining this one with #3 and calling it a day. As per anything in this crazy universe of ours, something within this issue struck me. One special aspect that I’d been clamoring for since #0, character development. What’s frustrating for me as a reader of Extreme Justice so far is characters, namely Maxima and Amazing-Man, getting little to no development. Oh sure Maxima and Amazing-Man have things to do but even Booster Gold was lost in the shuffle too. Extreme Justice is the Blue Beetle and Captain Atom show at this stage of the game. Dan Vado knocking Captain Atom out of commission gives the team the development they need.

A lesson for Extreme Justice: Character Development is Beautiful.

In any good team book, the key is to make every member of the group feel necessary. While Vado has each of the characters showing off a skill or two, they never seem to gel as a team. By the end of this issue, Extreme Justice begins to become a true team comic. Character development, it’s a magical thing. Even the bad guys get a moment of character development. The Beta Team robots that General Synge controls start to show personality. Synapse is the head robot over the robots in Beta Team called Kill-Units, but they don’t really want to kill. A nice twist on the formula of robot killers of the period, of course, Synapse is a jerk and zaps a Kill-Unit showing doubt in the mission. Heroes and Villains getting character development, I love it.

As we dive into the rest of the issue, our team gels together personality wise and now they can become a fighting force. Of course, even as they get over the hump of Amazing-Man doubts and more issues, they are dealing with a tough foe. One thing about Captain Atom, he’s tough as nails to kill if anything he’s nigh impossible to kill. Since he is also the official leader of the team as you know and I know, Captain Atom returns at the end. How does he return? The mystery will have to be revealed at a later date as that’s how Extreme Justice #2 ends.

This is a shorter recap of Extreme Justice than I’d like but that’s because there’s not a lot of big moments here. Marc Campos and Ken Branch were given many chances to show off at least. In between the short but needed character development Vado put in, this was a heavy action issue. I get the feeling Vado knew this could have been a slow issue so he piled on the action and it worked. The simple bits work in a comic at points, just enough character and a ridiculous amount of robot fighting. I am but a simple man and Extreme Justice plays to it in this issue.

As always thank you all for your support in my Extreme Justice adventures. Until next time, make sure to tune to this GWL Station and as I return with Extreme Justice #3!

The Geek Who Landed 3.0: The Full Return of the GWL!

This is so weird for me and exciting all at the same time. I’m reviving the Geek Who Landed brand in full today. I’ve been working on this for awhile and got everything organized for the most part today. Yep, that’s right today is the official launch. Though I will be working on layout and general bits and baubles over the coming days. Consider this site still under construction and an ever evolving project as the months go on. If you’re unfamiliar with me, hi I’m Wesley Messer and I’ve been writing for many sites for awhile, Comic Booked, Comics Crux, and so forth. I’ve been around awhile and I’ve always thought about doing my own things and now I am ready to revive this brand and make it stronger than ever.

Now what will I be up to with this new site here? It’s a fully owned domain, it’s going to be my official home so what the heck am I going to be up to? Here are my plans for what will be happening here on the GWL site of fun and wonder. As I have been plotting this out too, trying to set up a good plan for what I want to do with this site and I got a great idea of what I want to do.

First off, yes there will be comic reviews and so forth. I still like doing comic reviews and reviews of current books so that will be happening. I will also be doing looks at what I’m reading currently as I am doing a goodreads challenge so this is going to be where I chronicle that too. Now I also plan on talking Lucha Underground here too, I might not too weekly recaps of the show but hey if I get the itch I may just end up doing that. The other part is I will be doing the reading adventures of different runs of comic books. There is going to be a ton of retro content here, old comic books, cartoons, and so forth. I love oddball old comics and neat retro content so this is going to be a big part of the site. I got a lot of stuff planned for the days, weeks, and months and even years to come really. There’s a lot of comics, lot of TV, and whole lot of other stuff in the works that I am ready to make happen and make this site grow.

Thanks for reading and joining along for the ride. I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to read this. You checking this out means the world to me. To all of those who have been with me for a long time, thanks for being there and thanks for being awesome. Take care and hope you all enjoy what I do here with The Geek Who Landed 3.0.

(Yes I will be doing the casual posts too as for some strange reason people seem to like me being off the cuff so I hey I’m happy to oblige.)
